There are approximately ten gazillion books available to readers on Amazon, Smashwords, Goodreads, and other sites. There are almost that many authors out there trying to sell those books. The problem is finding readers willing to buy the books. Ask almost any author and they’ll tell you how hard that is. Don’t ask Stephen King or James Patterson. You can skip them.
Given what I’ve just said, it may sound strange when I tell you that when it comes to writing, I have no competitors. Yes, you read that correctly. No, I’m not being arrogant. Let me explain. I have a lot of writer friends, and I can sum up my philosophy regarding competition in the following statement:
The success of my fellow authors doesn’t hurt me. The failure of my fellow authors doesn’t help me.
Any author’s work must stand on its own. If you like the stories I tell and the way I write, you’ll buy my books. If you don’t, you won’t. That’s the way it should be. My fellow authors and I are all in the same boat. Okay, Stephen King has his own yacht. Big deal.
