I am a southern man and I speak in a southern voice. Most of the characters in my books and short stories also speak in a southern voice. The problem occurs when I introduce southern vernacular into my dialogue. Grammar check invariably flags me for typing a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Fine, but then it says “consider revising.” Consider revising? Is it right or is it wrong, or is it sort of right or sort of wrong? You’re the one who flagged it; don’t leave it up to me. I don’t want nuanced or ambivalent messages from the grammar police. Keep it up and I’ll turn you off.
